Hinesburg--Ten 4-H'ers flocked to Hinesburg on April 26 to test their knowledge of all things sheep.

The Hinesburg Town Hall was the setting for the annual Vermont 4-H Sheep Quiz Bowl and Skill-A-Thon. It was sponsored by University of Vermont (UVM) Extension and the State 4-H Sheep Committee and open to all Vermont 4-H club members, ages 8 to 18.

The day began with a Skill-A-Thon, which featured several learning stations where competitors answered questions or demonstrated a skill.

In this year's contest, stations covered types of injections and how to administer each, parts of the sheep, wool spinning and uses of wool, equipment, recordkeeping and sheep nutrition.

The 4-H'ers were split into two groups, according to years in the 4-H sheep program, to compete in the sheep quiz bowl that took place after lunch. They answered questions in fast-paced buzzer rounds on animal health, anatomy, feeds and nutrition, lambing, diseases and illnesses, breeds including breed history, the sheep industry and a wide range of other sheep-related topics.

The quiz bowl results were as follows:

  • Group One: William Cousineau, Orwell (first); Bekah Parent, Orwell (second); Willa Shakeshaft, Putnam Station, N.Y. (member of an Addison County 4-H club) and Raymond Bushey, Addison (tied for third); Jarrod Bushey, Addison (fourth)
  • Group Two: Caroline Hobbs, Hinesburg (first), Alysha Chesser, Shrewsbury (second); Corinna Hobbs, Hinesburg and Cyrus Tyler, Richmond (tied for third); Abhi Dodgson, South Hero (fourth)
