Farmers to Learn About Growing Grains in Vermont

Alburgh--The second annual Grain Research Tour, June 27 in Alburgh, will give farmers an opportunity to view research trials of wheat varieties and grains as well as hear from the experts on variety selection and other topics related to grain production.

The field day, sponsored by University of Vermont (UVM) Extension's Northwest Crops and Soils Team, will be held at the Borderview Research Farm, 146 Line Rd. It will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Registration is $15 and includes lunch from NOFA-VT's mobile pizza oven. Guest speaker, Julie Dawson, a postdoctoral research associate at Cornell University, will discuss the basics of on-farm variety trials and variety selection for wheat and other small grains. Farmers also will hear from Dr. Heather Darby, UVM Extension agronomist, and her research team and other farmers who will share their experiences with wheat and grain production.

The field day provides an opportunity to view university research trials, involving more than 1,000 plots of spring and winter wheat, heirloom wheat, spring and winter barley, flax and oats. Randy George of the Red Hen Baking Company in Middlesex will offer samples of bread baked from heirloom wheat varieties.
