Vermont 4-H'ers to Test Their Sheep Expertise

Hinesburg--Vermont 4-H'ers won't be sheepish about demonstrating their knowledge of lambing, shearing, sheep breeds and more at the annual Vermont 4-H Sheep Quiz Bowl and Skill-A-Thon, March 23 in Hinesburg.

The Hinesburg Community School on Route 116 is the venue for the day-long event hosted by University of Vermont (UVM) Extension and the State 4-H Sheep Committee. It's open to any state 4-H club member, 8 to 18. Membership in the 4-H sheep project is not required to participate, only an interest in sheep.

Registration is at 9:30 a.m. with the action getting underway at 10 a.m. The first event, the skill-a-thon, features a series of hands-on learning stations where contestants are tested on different sheep-related topics or skills such as feed samples, cuts of meat, functions of the stomach, zoonotic diseases and equipment.

After lunch the 4-H'ers will match wits in quiz bowl competition, buzzing in answers to questions on anatomy, animal health, feeds and nutrition, breeds, the sheep industry and a wide range of other topics. The day concludes with an awards ceremony.

Admission is free. No food will be sold on-site, so spectators and participants should bring a bag lunch and beverage.
