Burlington--The 2012 Vermont 4-H Quiz Bowl Team recently returned from Louisville, Ky., where they competed against teams from 18 other states in the National Invitational 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl.
The 4-H'ers representing the state at this prestigious event, Nov. 2-3 at the North American International Livestock Exposition, included Dacey Anechairico, Whiting; Brenda Atwater, Vernon; Michael Ingwersen, Addison; and Will Stanley, Enosburg Falls. They were accompanied by their coach Kaitlin Deuso Benoit and chaperone Mary Benoit, both from Montgomery Center.
The teens earned a place on the team by having the highest scores in the senior division (ages 14 and up) at the state quiz bowl competition sponsored by University of Vermont (UVM) Extension earlier this year. The team also competed at Eastern States Exposition in W. Springfield, Mass., in September.
The National 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl, which has been held annually since 1980, pits top quiz bowl teams from across the country against each other, providing a chance for them to demonstrate their knowledge in the areas of dairy nutrition, herd health, animal care, genetics, dairy products, herd management and other dairy-related topics.
On the first day of competition all contestants took a 50-question written exam to test their understanding of the dairy industry. Scores were used to rank the teams for the team quiz bowl contest the following day as well as were factored in to determine overall standings.
The State 4-H Dairy Committee helped fund the Vermont team's trip.
