Quick Guide to Video on the Web using iMovie

Start iMovie

On the Desktop, double-Click the iMovie Icon
iMovie starts up and loads the last project anyone using this computer might have been working on. So, you must start a new project. You will need to flip the Camera/Edit mode switch to Edit, then select New Project from the File menu. Call you project anything you like, save it to the desktop. iMovie will create a folder on the desktop with the same name as you chose for the project. We'll need to access this folder later.

Connect either your DV Camera OR use the VHS Deck and the SONY Media Converter

Connecting the DV Camera
Make sure the camera is turned on in VCR mode and connected to the computer with a Firewire cable. You will need a 6-pin to 4-pin Firewire cable to connect the two. This cable is generally provided with every DV camcorder. Firewire cable is fragile, especially on the 4-pin side, so be careful.

Connecting the VHS Deck and Sony Media Converter
Make sure the Sony Media Converter is turned on, the Analog In Button is pushed, and it is connected to the computer with a Firewire cable. Also turn on the VHS deck and the TV monitor.

Either way...
As soon as the connection is made the words Camera Connected should appear in the Monitor. If this doesn't happen, click the Camera button. The position on the tape will be shown in hrs:min:frames when connected to a DV camera; nothing shows when connected to the Sony Media Converter.

Error messages will be shown if there is no tape in the camera (ignore if using VHS Deck) or if the camera is disconnected.

Controlling the Camera
The DV camera may be controlled from the computer by clicking the buttons on the Playback Controls. With these you may do all of the functions of a VCR without touching the camera.

The Playback controls do not work when attached to the Sony Media Converter. Control the VHS deck manually, and click the Import button as needed

Importing the Video

This Quick Guide assumes that you will be capturing one continuous chunk of video from a pre-edited tape. If you plan to add titles, transitions, or effects the process gets a bit more complicated.

To ensure that your video is captured as one big chunk, select the iMovie Preferences from the Edit menu, select the Import Tab, and make sure Automatically start new clip at scene break is NOT checked

Cue the camera to the place where your footage starts. Then click Import. The video will be automatically imported onto the shelf and be given the name Clip 1 Importing can continue as long as there is a vacant space on your hard disk.

Once you have the clip you want, you can quit iMovie.

Now use Cleaner-EZ to make your web video

Start the Cleaner-EZ Application
From the Apple menu, select the Applications Folder, Cleaner-EZ, Cleaner-EZ.

Once Cleaner-EZ has started, find your project folder on the Desktop. Open the project folder, and open the Media folder inside. Drag the file named Clip 1 onto the Cleazer-EZ window.

Select the Wizards choice from the Cleaner-EZ settings pop-up, and follow the directions.

If you plan on using the CIT RealServer, you can create a SureStream video with multiple bandwidth encodings. Here's what we recommend:

  • If you think that this video will often be viewed on campus, you can also select Intranet/LAN
  • Select whatever is most appropriate for your video
  • Select whatever is most appropriate for your video
See the Streaming Media guide for directions on how and where to upload your RealVideos.
