Recommended Software

Electronic tools are the first choice for building and exchanging information. These tools must allow easy, reliable access to data, documents, and communication.

Below is a list of microcomputer applications that Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) recommends. Most of these applications are available for use in the computing facilities in Waterman Building and in Bailey-Howe Library, along with other advanced applications.

Where to get "The Essentials"

The University of Vermont has licensed many software package and provides them at a reduced price or free to UVM affiliates. Below, we've listed sources for commonly used software. A complete list of UVM software licenses is available at http://www.uvm.edu/ets/licensing.

  For Students For Departments
Microsoft Office When you purchase a computer from The Computer Depot, you can purchase Microsoft Office at the same time. 

Microsoft Office product are also available at reduced academic prices from the UVM Bookstore.

The options available to students are available to UVM Departments and employees. Additionally, departments my use the following licensing methods to acquire Microsoft Office:
  • Microsoft Campus Agreement provides UVM faculty and staff who regularly use computers in their jobs with the most current versions of Microsoft Office and Windows.
  • Microsoft Select Agreement allows departments and students to purchase licenses for Office products at a reduced cost.
Lotus SmartSuite Lotus SmartSuite is available from The Computer Depot for $29. It can be pre-installed, or it can be installed separately.
FileMaker Pro FileMaker Pro is available at reduced academic prices from the UVM Bookstore.
Antivirus Available for download from the UVM Software Archive.
Web Browser Internet Explorer is installed on all MS Windows computers.
Safari is installed on all Apple Macintosh computers.
Mozilla and Mozilla Firefox are available for download from the UVM Software Archive.
Electronic Mail Mozilla Mail/News is a component of the Mozilla 1.7 Suite.  Mozilla 1.7 and Mozilla Thunderbird are available from the UVM Software Archive.  Apple Mail is integrated with Macintosh OS X and is installed on all OS X systems.
