Meeting Location: University of Vermont, A/E Services
Meeting Purpose: To review AV technology requirements for
the University Commons project
Introduction:
1. The
purpose of this meeting was to review the AV technology requirements for the
University Commons project. A variety of issues were reviewed and
discussion/decisions/action items are noted below.
Discussion/Decisions/Action Items
1. A
dedicated distributed video system should be planned for the building, to
display information and entertainment content.
a. This
system should be independent of the campus cable television system, but should
contain a feed from the cable system.
b. The system
should accommodate the distribution and display of high-resolution computer
graphics, as well as lower resolution video images.
c. The system
will likely include displays at key building entrances as well dining areas,
lounges, etc. Pat Brown to provide further information regarding desired
locations for displays throughout the building.
d. The desire
for having a display within the ÒBarnes & NobleÓ section of the Bookstore
was discussed. This location will be verified as the architectural drawings
progress.
e. Large-scale
LCD displays are preferred over plasma displays. It is anticipated that LCD
displays will be both larger in size and less expensive by the time that the
system is designed and specified.
2. Distributed
audio systems are desired in certain areas of the building for background
music.
a. Audio
systems will be separate and dedicated to a particular area of the building.
b. Pat Brown
to provide further information regarding building areas that require an audio
system.
3. The
implementation of a building-wide paging system was discussed. This system can
be zoned such that pages can be sent to any or all areas of the building.
Typical modules are provided in blocks of eight.
a. Pat Brown
to provide further regarding which areas of the building should be covered, and
how these areas can logically be zoned.
4. The buildingÕs
AV infrastructure will be coordinated with the cable tray system, which will be
able to be accessed from public areas.
5. The
buildingÕs retail tenants will be responsible for provided audiovisual systems
in their space.
6. The
Theater will be a flexible space, accommodating movies, small music events,
presentations, and theatrical performances. The Rehearsal Theater will also be
a flexible Òblack boxÓ style theater.
a. Detailed
descriptions and programmatic requirements for both spaces will be necessary to
properly plan the appropriate audiovisual systems. WTW to provide Sextant with
the programmatic usage document for this area (which was previously prepared by
Pat Brown.) Usage of this area will also be reviewed by UVM.
7. The WRUV
radio station was discussed, but the individuals in this meeting were not
familiar with the radio stationÕs particular needs. Further information and
will be provided by Pat Brown.
8. A portion
of the Dining Area may become a separate ÒrestaurantÓ, and include an
audiovisual system for presentations. WTW to provide Sextant with further
information as this area evolves.
9. Meeting
Rooms (4th floor):
a. Each
Meeting Room will be equipped with a Òhigh-endÓ audiovisual presentation
system. Because different user groups will use the spaces, they must contain
consistent user interfaces. Further information is needed from UVM regarding
existing campus standards for audiovisual systems within meeting rooms or
classrooms.
b. Videoconferencing
capability is desired in the Meeting Rooms. The advantages and disadvantages of
portable vs. installed videoconferencing systems were briefly discussed.
Further information is needed from UVM/WTW:
1) Will
portable systems be desired for the smaller rooms?
2) Will some
of the rooms contain built-in systems, possibly utilizing rear-projection? Rear
projection systems are highly recommended for large-scale videoconferencing
facilities. The advantages and disadvantages should also be further reviewed
regarding these systems.
c. The
Multipurpose Room, a large divisible meeting space, was briefly discussed.
Further discussions will be required to determine the desired functionality of
audiovisual presentation systems within the room.
10.
Wireless networking was discussed and the consensus is to provide
appropriate infrastructure to allow for wireless coverage throughout the entire
building. Access point electronics can be purchased on an as-needed basis
before and after the buildingÕs opening.
11.
UVM will schedule future meetings to review security requirements for
the project.
We
are proceeding in accordance with the information stated above. Please notify
WTW, in writing, if there are any corrections or additions to this report.
