Configuring E-Mail Clients for Secure Socket Layer (SSL)
Use this guide to enable your e-mail program to use SSL. If you have
never used your e-mail program before and are setting it up for the first
time, follow the full
configuration guide first and then return here for specific SSL
instructions.
Eudora 5.2.1
Start Eudora.
In the menu bar, click Tools and select Options.
Click the Checking Mail category from the list on the left.
Under Secure Sockets when Receiving, select "If Available,
STARTTLS" from the drop-down menu.
Click the Sending Mail category from the list on the left.
Put a check in the "Allow authentication" checkbox. Under
Secure Sockets when Sending, select "If Available,
STARTTLS" from the drop-down menu.
Click OK to save the changes.
Try to check mail. If checking mail fails:
in the menu, click Tools and select
Personalities. The Personalities frame should appear where your
mailboxes normally are.
Right click <Dominant> (or whatever the name of
your Personality is) and left click Properties.
Click the Incoming Mail tab at the top.
Click the Last SSL Info button at the bottom (if you
get an error message when you do this, try checking mail again; Eudora
must try and fail the mail check).
Click the Certificate Information Manager button.
Click the Add to Trusted button at the bottom.
Click Done, then OK, and OK again.
Check mail again. It may take a little time (especially if
you have a lot of stored mail), but the check should now succeed.
Click Tools and select Mailboxes to return to your list of
mailboxes.
Try to send mail. If sending mail fails:
Click the New Message button to open a blank message window.
Copy and paste this text into the body of the blank message
window:
<x-eudora-option:SSLReceiveVersion=6>
The text will appear in blue as a clickable link. Hold down
the ALT key on your keyboard and click on the link.
In the window that opens, click OK to accept the new
value.
Copy, paste, and ALT-click the other following text as
well:
<x-eudora-option:SSLSendVersion=6>
<x-eudora-option:SSLAltPortReceiveVersion=6>
<x-eudora-option:SSLAltPortSendVersion=6>
Click OK for each to accept their new values.
Try to send mail again. The send should now succeed.
Netscape 7.1/Mozilla 1.4
Start your mail program.
In the menu bar, click Edit and choose Mail & Newsgroups
Account Settings.
Click Server Settings and check "Use secure connection
(SSL)."
Click Outgoing Server (SMTP) and check "Use name and
password." Make sure your Zoo NetID appears in the User Name
field.
On that same screen, set Use secure connection (SSL) to
"When available."
Click OK to save the changes.
Outlook Express 6
Start Outlook Express.
In the menu bar, click Tools and choose Accounts.
Click the Mail tab, highlight your mail account, and click the
Properties button.
Click the Servers tab. Under Outgoing Mail Server,
check the box "My server requires authentication."
Next to that, click the Settings button, and make sure Logon
Information is set to "Use same settings as my incoming mail
server." Then click OK.
Click the Advanced tab and check BOTH "This server
requires a secure connection (SSL)" checkboxes.
Click OK to save the changes. If asked to refresh your
mailboxes, click Yes. Click Close to return to
the main Outlook Express screen.
Pine
There is no "secure" or "insecure" way to run Pine on
the zoo.uvm.edu cluster. Pine becomes a secure client when it is accessed
using SSH rather than Telnet. Feel free to use Pine as your mail client,
but please use SSH to get there.
UVM Webmail
Webmail already uses SSL. You do not need to make any changes.
