A. To get to the Zoo prompt, you need to have Telnet or SSH software on your computer, and you need to have a working internet connection.
If you are using a Windows machine, you can run a telnet program such as CRT, or go to the Start Menu, Run, and type "telnet zoo.uvm.edu". We recommend that you use the SSH Client for Windows, which is available from CIT's Software Archive. This program will encrypt your password so that it cannot be "sniffed" over the network. Using SSH is particularly important if you are connecting from off-campus.
If you are using a Macintosh, you can use Better Telnet to connect to Zoo. We recommend that you use NiftyTelnet, a program that uses SSH to encrypt your password so that it cannot be "sniffed" over the network. Using SSH is particularly important if you are connecting from off-campus. You can download either program from CIT's Software Archive if they are not installed on your computer.
If you are using a Macintosh and running OSX, you can also run the Terminal program (in Applications, Utilities) and type "ssh username@zoo.uvm.edu" where username is your zoo username. Drag the Terminal application into your dock for easier access.
Once you are at the Zoo prompt, you can run many applications, manage your files, run Pine, etc.
