Q. Why is it called Zoo?

Zoo is actually a collection of servers that serve the computing needs of many people across the university. Although the server name is "zoo" and mail is truly delivered to NetID@zoo.uvm.edu, some UVM affiliates prefer not to use the name "zoo", and instead publish their e-mail address as fistname.lastname@uvm.edu or NetID@uvm.edu.

Each server in the computing cluster has been named after an animal for historical reasons (those of us who have been here a while probably remember "Moose"). Since many of our servers answer to the same name, it seemed natural to make that name "Zoo", meaning a collection of captive animals. Now, if only we could get them to breed...
