A. There are many programs available on Zoo. Some programs can be run from the Zoo command prompt, and some require that you be running an X session.
Here are just a few programs you can run from the Zoo command prompt:
pine - a powerful text-based e-mail program
telnet - connect to other servers
recover - recover zoo files that you accidentally deleted
pico, vi, emacs - text editors
ftp - file transfer protocol
tin - newsgroup reader - read UVMToday, etc.
ph - look up phone numbers for UVM affiliates
mysql - powerful database program, useful for interfacing with web pages
gcg - genetics tool
SAS, SPSS, minitab, Splus - statistical software
many programming languages
Here are just a few programs you can run when you have an X session open:
netscape - web browser
xv - useful for viewing and resizing images
mathematica - math programming and modelling program
SAS - statistical program
SPSS - statistical program
some GCG modules - genetics sequence analysis tool
x-emacs - graphical version of emacs, a powerful text editor
arcinfo - GIS mapping software
erdas imagine - GIS related software
