One question we often get at Project CATalyst is "Is my PC going to be okay for accessing Oracle/PeopleSoft?" Since PeopleSoft is a Web-based application, the quick answer is that if you have access to the Internet today you should have no problem using Oracle/PeopleSoft. Of course, it's not quite that simple so we have developed a desktop technology assessment available at http://www.uvm.edu/catalyst/Tech_Assessment/TechReadinessAssessment.pdf. After completing the assessment you'll know if you have enough RAM, a fast enough processor, the right software, if your browser is compatible, and more.
A few things to keep in mind if you are accessing Oracle/PeopleSoft from a remote location: Assuming you meet the minimum hardware requirements, the greatest impact on Oracle/PeopleSoft performance on your desktop will be from the speed of your connection to the Internet. If you access the software through a dial-up modem performance will be slow. If you anticipate doing a significant amount of work in Oracle/PeopleSoft you may want to consider upgrading to DSL or cable. The CATalyst Technology Team has designed the system so that it will not be necessary to have the VPN (virtual private network, available from the UVM software download site) installed on your computer to access Oracle/PeopleSoft from remote locations. Finally, when using Oracle/PeopleSoft through a remote PC, be aware that your personal firewall settings can impact your ability to access the software.
