Legal Issues Day promotes information security awareness

On June 21, 2005 University Training and Development held a compliance, regulatory, and legal issues workshop for all UVM staff. A total of 231 employees attended 23 workshops. Several of the workshops dealt with handling and securing electronic information. A brief description and link to course content of those workshops focused on information technology are highlighted below:

  • Outsmart the Hackers: Strategies for Securing Your Electronic Information

    Description: Learn about safe computing practices and how to keep electronic information secure. Small group activities will focus on true accounts of information theft and the secret ways that hackers are able to pickpocket your data.

  • File Sharing: The Good, the Bad, and the Illegal
    Jonathan Trigaux, CIT Client Services / Rubenstein School of Environment & Natural Resources
    Description: Learn the many methods of sharing files between computers and what their technical and legal ramifications can be. Brief overviews and Q&A discuss the pros and cons, and what the RIAA or MPAA has to say about it.

  • Say What? Free Speech, UVM Policy, and Online Communications

    Description: As an academic institution, UVM values the free exchange and expression of ideas, whether communication takes place in person or online. Through case studies, this session will look at situations where free speech rights bump up against the law, UVM policy, and the objections of those who are offended. Are there restrictions on web browsing? Who monitors my online communication? Do different rules apply to personal and institutional email and web pages? What recourse does one have as a victim of unwanted electronic communication?

  • HIPAA Security and Your Desktop: How to make your desktop more secure
    Carley Tillinghast, Human Resources
    Description: You will learn how to protect your files when you get up and leave your desk. You will learn how to secure you desktop from malware and what are some of the things these pesky things can do to your files and system. You will learn how to use email and attachments in a secure manner, and what some of the best practices are for sending data and various other security measures.
