Tiger roars onto campus

Mac OS X 10.4/Tiger made its way to campus in early June, but several operating system caveats forced Computing & Information Technology to delay support of this operating system. Specifically, when Tiger was released there were incompatibility issues with the VPN client, the Active Directory client Thursby's AdmitMac, and Symantec Norton Antivirus.

All of these problems have been more or less resolved -- Tiger-compatible versions of the VPN client and Antivirus software are available at UVM's software download site. The VPN client still exhibits a few behavioral problems in the Tiger-compatible version on some machines, namely:

  • VPN refuses to quit
  • VPN quits on its own
  • Error on startup; okay after repeated attempts; better after uninstall & reinstall
These problems have been reported to Cisco and a new installer will be published to the UVM software download site as soon as it is available.

Thursby's product is no longer needed with Tiger. Instead Tiger users can go to the Finder, click Go, Connect to Server, and connect directly to the Active Directory shares by typing in the following server paths:

    cifs://files/shared
    cifs://files/home

Once you click Connect, make sure the Domain field is set to CAMPUS, then enter your UVM netID and password to log into your Active Directory space.

If you are upgrading to Tiger, or have already done the upgrade, and AdmitMac is already installed on your computer please download and run Thursby's uninstaller to safely remove the product from your computer. (As a precaution, back up your data first!)

If you have not yet purchased Tiger, take a tour of its new features at Apple's site then contact Microcomputer Services at 656-3067 to purchase the product at the educational price of $69.

CIT will begin official support of OS X Tiger on August 1, 2005 but please feel free to contact the CIT Helpline if you have questions or problems.
