Microsoft Campus Agreement Implementation Project

Microsoft software now available at work and at home

UVM subscribes, effective July 1, 2005, to a Microsoft volume licensing program for the most commonly used Microsoft software. The Microsoft Campus Agreement program provides the latest releases of the following software for all University-owned computers, and for faculty and staff working at home:
  • Office Standard and Professional, for Windows and Macintosh
  • Windows operating system upgrades
  • Visual Studio
  • Certain specialized software
  • Microsoft eLearning Library (MELL)

Microcomputer Services will install Office on all new Macintosh and Windows systems purchased by departments. Computing and Information Technology is working with Microsoft to develop convenient methods for distributing Office, Windows operating system upgrades, and other covered software. Work-at-home installations will always require purchase of inexpensive work-at-home media, also available from Microcomputer Services.

CIT asks faculty and staff considering installing or upgrading covered software to consult with their department's or college's information technology support team, if one exists. Upgrade policies and practices will be at the discretion of each college or department.  In particular, Windows operating system installations and upgrades should not be attempted without sufficient knowledge and experience. Department's or college's IT personnel can contact Microcomputer Services to obtain access to the software.

This year (FY 2006), central funding will cover the difference between payments from previously participating units and the whole campus. The University's experience will be reviewed prior to our FY 2007 renewal date, and a decision will be made whether to continue the full Campus Agreement as well as how it will be funded.  UVM obtained advantageous subscription pricing by joining a consortium with other schools through NERCOMP.  NERCOMP membership is funded by University Training and Development and Computing & Information Technology.

Most students' computers are not covered by the University Campus Agreement in FY 2006. The School of Business Administration and the College of Medicine do fund Campus Agreement for their students. Other students are eligible for discounts under Microsoft's Select Agreement.
