Removing water with Bucket and Rope (Maromakotra)
In areas where the water table encroaches on mining pits, artisanal miners use rudimentary methods to remove the water, often just a bucket on a rope. One miner aboveground removes water temporarily while a miner below digs quickly, often partially immersed in dirty water himself. Miners tell of men who drown in pits that refill too quickly with water.
