WE ENVISION a retrofitted and expanded Aiken Center that provides needed space, a minimal ecological footprint, uses natural lighting, and has pure air and ecological elements, including water and plants, in its corridors. The Aiken Center should be the first institutional building at The University of Vermont that beautifully celebrates life within, becoming the cornerstone of UVM’s prominence as a leading environmental university. We envision a year-round greenhouse and native landscaping, with state-of-the-art energy and water conservation and air circulation. The Aiken Center should be a place like no other to date and represent a harbinger for our future.

WE FIRMLY BELIEVE that global climate change is a real threat to human society and nature.  To responsibly address this issue, we have begun an initiative to reduce our collective carbon output.  We plan to evaluate our existing carbon emission and then set goals for reducing it through a series of community actions and institutional incentives, including strategies of purchasing "carbon credits" and creating offsets both on and off of Rubenstein School properties.  Through collective action, the Rubenstein School faculty, staff, and students can both learn about and contribute to meeting this fundamental challenge of our times.
