A Conversation with Trustees (edu064)

Consider this an invitation to sit down with a small group of trustees and talk about things that matter to UVM. We'll start the hour with the trustees taking a few moments to help us understand who they are and why they chose to serve in such a demanding role. The balance of the time will be devoted to a two-way conversation about hopes and dreams and fears and vision…giving staff the opportunity to listen and share with trustees and trustees the opportunity to do the same with staff.
Advocate for Yourself at Work (edu083)

This interactive workshop especially for women will explore issues related to career advancement including setting professional goals, balancing professional responsibilities with personal responsibilities, and advocating for the support you need to achieve your goals. The session is open to all, but will focus on the dynamics of successfully navigating the professional world as a woman.
Affirmative Action Recruiting and Hiring: Best Practices (edu069)

UVM has a compelling interest in cultivating an educational and work environment rich in diversity and opportunity. To that end, AAEO, in consultation with campus partners, has updated recruiting practices to drive the University interest and to assure compliance with federal regulations through affirmative recruiting practices and philosophies. This workshop will address concepts such as:
- cultural fluency
- diversity as an imperative
- essential elements of a successful search
- dynamic networking
- objective selection
- interview protocol and question guidance, plus
- ideas on creating inclusive, welcoming impressions
This is an important training opportunity for campus leaders chairing and participating in searches.

Nationwide, a fire department responds to a fire every 23 seconds and each year more than 3,000 Americans die as a result of fires. Learn the facts about fires and staying safe at home and at work. This workshop will cover fire behavior, smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, cooking fire safety and fire extinguishers. The session will culminate with hands-on fire extinguisher training using live fire (weather permitting).
Americans with Disabilities Act (edu049)

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) protects qualified individuals with disabilities as they seek employment and while they are working. How does UVM fulfill its responsibilities as an employer and what is your role as a member of the University community? This workshop will describe provisions of the ADA, focusing especially on the responsibilities supervisors have related to interviewing, hiring, interactive discussion and reasonable accommodation. Bring your questions and concerns to this workshop led by UVM's Faculty and Staff ADA Liaison.

One of the basic premises of Appreciative Inquiry (Ai) is that all voices within a system are valid and that the best change experiences engage everyone in the process. The hectic pace of life and the demands of the workplace generate stress for each of us. This workshop is aimed at helping you to get out ahead of the stress--to prepare for it in a sense. Stress may be unavoidable, but you are not helpless against it. Come to this session to learn more about how to handle stress and get the tools you need to meet it at the door and keep it at a low level. Take a step toward freeing yourself from its grip and learn to operate in a more relaxed frame of mind.

Communicating Effectively with Chinese Students (edu073)

With large numbers of Chinese students entering American institutions, cross-cultural communication presents a challenge to many staff members. How do Chinese students communicate in their own culture? How do they perceive American institutions? What strategies are helpful for communicationing with these students? This presentation will describe characteristics of Chinese culture that impact the Chinese way of communication, and recommend positive approaches for communication with Chinese students.

Course Objective: The objective is for us all to gain a better ability to critically analyze our own leadership processes and the meaning of culture for our work and in our lives. The course will focus on four cultural themes: Verbal / Nonverbal — Competition/Collaboration — Power / Control — Individual/Collective. These four themes will provide a structure for a critical analysis of how difference is socially constructed within cultures.

Diagramming Business Issues: Picture This! (edu089)

Books go on shelves...diagrams go on walls. Participants in this workshop will sample an array of diagrams and discuss their thoughts about what makes "a great diagram great." After drawing some important conclusions, you will be introduced to simple and effective visual communication tips, along with Microsoft Office techniques for constructing the simplest diagram possible for any complex business issue. Afterward, you will put this knowledge to work, either by creating your own "live" diagram to be used in an actual presentation, or by working on practice diagrams.
Diversity and Justice at UVM: A Perspective of Our History (edu096)

Ever wonder where the principles found in "Our Common Ground" originated? Is UVM the same place it was 25 years ago? What has changed? How have students and staff worked to bring about this change? We will explore UVM's justice history through a variety of presentation modes including video from the 1960's, from the 1988 Waterman Takeover, and the 1991 Waterman Takeover. Mindfulness Skills for Everyday Life (edu090)

Mindfulness is our innate ability to be fully present and accepting of each moment of our lives. We habitually fail to apply this important skill, and spend much of our lives lost in thoughts, fantasies, plans, worries, and anxieties. This workshop will introduce several basic practices for cultivating more mindful moments in our lives, and will provide resources and tips for developing an ongoing practice. The regular practice of mindfulness helps lower stress by cultivating greater self-awareness, self-acceptance, self-management of emotions, improved concentration, and overall enhanced well-being.

Staff Council is a governance body made up of elected representatives from across the University who serve in an advisory capacity to the University President. For more than 40 years, Staff Council has served as an advocate for all staff by seeking out and responding to their ideas and concerns, representing them to the University administration, and keeping staff informed of University initiatives. Staff Council also works to create a cohesive community at UVM, have a positive impact on staff culture, and promote the betterment of all.
This Town Meeting is an opportunity to learn about the work of Staff Council while having the opportunity to ask questions, raise concerns and provide constructive feedback. We want to know what's on your mind so we can work to better address the needs of staff at UVM. Managers must balance deadlines, supervising duties, and getting their own work done. Humans have survived due to their capacity to adapt. Yet the adaptive strategies that one may use to cope with work stress may not always be in the best interest of the person's health and wellbeing. We will take a look at four strategies that reduce the impact of the stress that comes from today's 24/7 world. This workshop will:
- Review statistics demonstrating that certain types of workloads can affect productivity
- Identify specific work stressors and determine a person's locus of control for each stressor
- Identify how personal traits can feed the stress habit
- Provide six antidotes to counteract six common stressors at work
- Review four key strategies to help reduce the impact of work stress

Who You Are and How You Are in Conflict (edu062)

Conflict is inherent in any relationship (workplace, personal, etc.). Many of us have learned how to manage conflict through rules and norms modeled by our families, the media, educational systems and other social systems. However, the messages and behaviors we have learned through observation and experience often go unexamined. In this workshop we will provide the opportunity to better understand our own conflict beliefs, triggers and approaches. In addition, we will examine avenues for working with conflict as it arises in the workplace, and equip you with basic tools for conflict intervention. This session, presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont, will review healthcare benefits offered to UVM staff and will answer a variety of questions, including: What are my healthcare benefits? How do my healthcare benefits work? How do I see a doctor? What are preventive benefits? What should I do if I have questions about a doctor bill? If time permits, the Blue Cross and Blue Shield representative will be available after the session to answer personal questions.
