Frequently Asked Questions - Office Suite 2016 - UVM Essentials Certificate

Who is eligible for the Office Suite 2016 – UVM Essentials Certificate Program?

Staff and faculty with a PeopleSoft ID can register for Professional Development and Training classes. Those who do not have a PeopleSoft ID are not eligible. Due to resource restrictions, UVM students (including student employees) and retirees are not eligible.

When, how, and how often will the final exam be offered?

The Office Suite 2016 – UVM Essentials final exam will be offered in the weeks following the completion of the 13 program classes. Professional Development and Training will try to offer the exam at different times of the day and on different days of the week to accommodate participant availability. The exam must be taken in person at the location designated by Professional Development and Training, and will not be offered online.

How do I know when the final exam is being offered?

Check PeopleSoft for the schedule. The program’s final exam will be listed in PeopleSoft as course CPT052 with multiple sessions. Those wishing to take the exam must register for a session (see next question and answer).

How do I sign up for the Office Suite final exam?

The Software Certificate final exam will be listed in PeopleSoft as course CPT052 with multiple sessions. Those wishing to take the exam must register for a session. To sign up, log into PeopleSoft and navigate to: Self-Service > Learning and Development > Request Training Enrollment to register by course number CPT052. NOTE: Since this course code is also the same code used for the Excel 2016 Certificate final exam, please write in the comments section of the registration page which exam you will be taking.

What happens if I do not pass the final exam?

The Office Suite 2016 – UVM Essentials Certificate Program final exam can be taken a maximum of two times. Please register for a future exam session. If the final exam is not passed on the second attempt, the participant must go through the program again before taking the exam for the third time.

Do I have to take all 13 courses?

Participants who feel they have a sufficient base knowledge of Excel 2016 can opt to take the Professional Development and Training test-out exam. A passing grade of 85% or higher is required to test out of the three basic-level Excel 2016 classes (CPT055, CPT056, and CPT057). The remaining 10 program classes must be attended.

If I pass the Excel Basics test-out exam, do I get credit in PeopleSoft for these classes?

No, passing the Excel Basics test-out only allows you to skip the three basic-level Excel classes as part of the certificate program. PeopleSoft will not reflect that you have attended these three basic Excel classes.

How do I sign up for the Excel Basics test-out exam?

The Excel Basics test-out exam will be listed in PeopleSoft as course CPT047 with multiple sessions. Those wishing to take the exam must register for a session. To sign up, log into PeopleSoft using the Human Resource login and navigate to: Self-Service > Learning and Development > Request Training Enrollment to register by course number CPT047.

Do I have to take the 10 Excel classes in order?

Professional Development and Training highly recommends taking the 10 Excel classes in the order they are offered as each subsequent Excel class builds upon the knowledge learned in previous classes. Although some review of previous concepts is built into the basic Excel classes, please keep in mind that time does not permit the instructor to explain concepts that were covered in a previous class.

Why can’t I test out of other classes?

Part of the learning process is being a part of and contributing to the classes we offer. Participants contribute by asking questions, answering questions, adding to the discussion (which is greatly beneficial to fellow participants), and providing feedback. The learning experience is greatly enhanced by participating in these classes, which is why we do not offer testing out of additional classes.

If I miss a class for which I am registered, can I continue taking the remaining classes and take the missed class the next time it is offered?

Each subsequent Excel class builds upon the knowledge learned in previous classes. The same is true with the two Word classes. Professional Development and Training highly recommends taking the Excel classes in the order in which they are offered, but it is permissible to take a missed class the next time it is offered. Although some review of previous concepts is built into the basic Excel classes, please keep in mind that time does not permit the instructor to explain concepts that were covered in a previous class. The two Word classes must be taken in order, starting with Word 2016 – Basics (CPT064) and followed by Word 2016 – Intermediate (CPT065).

What if I have to leave a class early?

Coming to class late or leaving early can be disruptive, not only to other participants but to the instructor as well. We ask that if you cannot arrive on time and stay for the entire session that you cancel your registration and look to reschedule when the time works better for you.

How do I know what courses I have taken?

Sign into PeopleSoft Human Resources and navigate to: Self-Service > Learning and Development > Training Summary to see the courses you have taken.

How do I know what is on the final exam?

The final exam will cover concepts learned in all 13 program classes, which is why it is important to attend and participate in each class.

Why do I have to take all of the classes on the same version of software? What if I take some of the classes with Excel (or Word) 2016 and then Professional Development and Training switches to a newer version of Excel (or Word)?

The certificate program Professional Development and Training is currently offering is the Office Suite 2016 – UVM Essentials Certificate Program. All of the classes in this program use Office 2016. Each new version of Excel, Word, or PowerPoint includes new or changed functionality. It is because of these application changes that we require all of the classes be on the same version of Office, and not across versions.

Professional Development and Training will not switch from one version of Office to a newer version while in the middle of a series. Upgrades to newer Office versions do not happen every year, and there are several opportunities to take the classes required for this program using the same software version. When a software upgrade takes place, the classes in this program are updated, and the series of new classes are offered starting in September. The Excel Certificate Program will also be updated to represent the newest Office version.

Are you going to offer certificate programs for other software programs?

Professional Development and Training also offers an Excel 2016 Certificate Program.

What happens if I took a 2013 version of these classes?

Professional Development and Training frequently updates each class, especially as changes are made to the applications. Because of this, only Office 2016 classes will be counted towards the certificate.

When will I know if I have passed the final exam?

Professional Development and Training will notify you within one week of taking the final exam.

How long do I have to take all of the required classes?

For a few reasons, Professional Development and Training highly recommends that the classes be taken close together. One reasons is that it is easier to remember what you have learned, which helps since each subsequent Excel class builds on knowledge learned in the previous classes. Another reason we recommend taking the classes close together is to help you pass the final exam, as the information learned will be fresh in your mind. A third reason is because we cannot predict when the next version of Excel will be released, causing a change in our program.

What happens after I pass the final exam?

Once you have completed the final exam, you will be notified within one week of your score. If you have passed the exam, Professional Development and Training will send you a certificate marking the completion of the Office Suite 2016 – UVM Essentials program. We will also add the certificate program completion to your training record in PeopleSoft.
