Advocates are members of the UVM community who support a complainant of bias incidents and perform the following functions:

  • Support complainant(s) through the reporting process;
  • Communicate with the Bias Response Team about the needs and concerns of complainant (s), and emerging issues related to the reported bias incident; and
  • Refer the complainant (s) to appropriate resources.

Advisors are members of the UVM community who serve as a liaison to those who are accused of perpetrating (respondent) an act of bias. Advisors are available on an as needed basis based on the circumstances of the bias incident. Advisors perform the following functions:

  • Provide information about the process for resolving bias incidents (including potential options for restorative practices);
  • Communicate with the Bias Response Team about needs and concerns of the respondent, and emerging issues related to the bias incident; and
  • Refer the respondent to appropriate resources.

Note: Advocates and Advisors are staff and faculty that are committed to supporting students, staff, and faculty who may experience bias. Each of them have and continue to receive training to address the needs of our community.
