Originally from Brazil, Paula Higa has been teaching, choreographing and performing since the late eighties. In Brazil, she received her ballet training from "Escola de Ballet Lúcia Millas" from RAD examiners Lucia Millas and Marly Apoliano. She also studied modern dance and ballet with Sueli Cherbino at "Natura Essencia" school of dance; both schools in Santos, São Paulo. In the States, Paula attended the Bachelor of Fine Arts program in dance at the University of Texas at Austin, where she had the pleasure to study with Yacov Sharir, Lyn Wiltshire, Andrea Beckham, Holly Williams, and Kent D'Spain.
Professionally, Paula has performed for "Theatrum Cia de Dança" in São Paulo under the direction of Roberto Peres, in Vermont for Jennifer Monson, Tiffany Rhynard's BIG APE dance company, Laurel Tentindo, Lida Winfield, Dance Tramp, and in Austin, Texas for Diverse Space Dance Theater under the direction of Toni Bravo. As a choreographer, Paula has been presenting her work extensively in venues in Brazil and nationwide. Her most recent work with her very own dance company, PH Dance & Ers was presented at Triskelion Arts - Comedy in Dance Festival in NYC. She is the founder of "Encounters", in which a musician and a dancer meet to create original work through improvisation without previous score, with Arthur Brooks and Anthony Santor.
Currently she is pursuing her master degree in Dance and Choreography at University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, where she received two awards from UWM: Departmental Award and UWM Chancellor's Award. As a faculty member in the Music and Dance department at the University of Vermont, she teaches Ballet, Contemporary and Brazilian Dance. Paula holds a degree in Chemical Engineering; however the chemistry that she likes the most happens during her creative process.
