Engaging Students in Large Enrollment Classes
A Program from the Center for Teaching & Learning
This program is designed to address the pedagogical and logistical challenges specific to teaching classes with large enrollments. The cornerstone of the program is a three-day workshop to be held August 7-9, 2013, followed up with two to three luncheon events during the coming year. Participants will apply some of the strategies they learn in their design and implementation of a course in AY 13-14.
In this program, participants will:
- design a course to meet clearly stated learning outcomes
- become familiar with the Universal Design for Learning principles of multiple means of engagement, representation, and expression
- experiment with, and assess the value of, a variety of student engagement techniques
- learn techniques to improve management of student grades, communication, and classroom conduct
Program participants will receive the following:
- a grant to support teaching, service, and research
- resources and books to support course design
- eligibility for up to 15 hours of technical support from a student "TechCAT." This support could include assistance in implementing student response systems, Blackboard course organization, and training in screencasting applications.
About the Workshop
This 3-day workshop will include presentations and discussions on best teaching and course design practices as well as small group and individual consultations with peer faculty and workshop facilitators to give advice and feedback on course design. There will be dedicated work time when faculty can actively revise and draft syllabi, assignments, and course projects.

| Who: | This program is open to tenure track faculty and instructors scheduled to teach a large enrollment course in AY 13-14. GTAs who are the primary instructors for a large enrollment course may be accommodated as space permits. (Depending on departmental policy, graduate students may not be eligible for the grant.) |
