Ancient Glacial Surfaces, Minnesota and Baffin Island



Cosmogenic dating of glacial landforms assumes that nuclides are not inherited from periods of prior exposure. On both Baffin Island and in southwestern Minnesota, we sampled outcrops that had complex exposure histories and used multiple cosmogenic nuclides to decipher those histories. On Baffin Island, we found that outcrops on high-elevation surfaces had long and complex exposure histories but were mantled by young erratics suggesting burial by cold-based ice. In Minnesota, the outcrops were likely at some time in the past covered not by ice but by loess or till.
