Pure Vermont Program

Congratulations to Pure Vermont Award Recipient Carol Goehring!

The first Pure Vermont Award was issued on Thursday, July 12, 2012, to Ms. Carol Goehring, a St. Johnsbury Price Chopper Associate, who prevented a Vermont senior from losing $1000 to wire fraud.  Upon accepting the award, Ms. Goehring attributed the ability to identify the "Grandparent scam" to the wire fraud training program that is required by her employer.

Ms. Goehring's efforts are especially meaningful because wire fraud is a national problem that directly impacts our Vermont neighbors.  Since January 1, 2012, the Attorney General's Consumer Assistance Program has received 42 reports of fraud-induced wire transfers, equating to $57,000 in losses.  The actual total loss is greater.  Wire fraud is an effective scamming method, because once the money is sent it is virtually impossible to get it back.

The best way to stop these scams is through vigilance by the public, by the diligent efforts of responsible agents like Ms. Goehring, and by retailers requiring annual specialized training for all employees who handle wire transfers.
