Money Matters: Tips from the Federal Trade Commission

A Message from Attorney General Bill Sorrell

Have you ever ordered merchandise that was never delivered, or when delivered turned out not to be what was promised? Have you ever been dissatisfied with a repair, even after returning to the merchant to complain?

If you paid for goods or services with a credit card, you have rights that you don’t have if you paid by check, money order or cash. The federal Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA) and Vermont’s Credit Billing Act establish procedures that require creditors to correct errors quickly and resolve disputes between consumers and merchants.

To find out more about your rights as a credit card consumer, visit our our Credit Card FAQ's page, or check out the Attorney General's brochure Tips for Smart Consumers: Credit Card Rights

You can also find out more about credit cards at the website for the Federal Trade Commission.  Click on the Money Matters link on the right for more information from the FTC.

New Credit Card Rights

In February of 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law several reforms with regard to the credit card industry.  Some of these changes are already in effect.  You can find out more about your new rights under the Credit CARD Act of 2009 from the White House press release and related news articles.
