I am having a problem with a business...

Most consumer transactions with businesses go smoothly.  If there is a problem, bringing the issue to the attention of the business manager or owner will often result in some sort of resolution.  However, in some instances, consumers can have difficulty resolving their complaints directly with the business.

The Attorney General's Consumer Assistance Program provides a mediation service to assist with resolving consumer complaints against businesses and to provide information to consumers about their rights as consumers.

Following are some general guidelines about some of your rights as a Vermont consumer:

Return Policies

Under Vermont law, businesses must generally make their return policies available to consumers.  Return policies should typically be posted near a point of sale or other prominent place.

Gift Certificates

Under Vermont law, gift certificates must have an expiration date clearly printed on the certificate, otherwise they are considered not to expire.  There are exceptions for certain items and services, such as perishable food and seasonal recreation (e.g. golf clubs, ski passes, etc.) Read about your gift certificate rights on our Gift Certificates FAQs page.

Right to Cancel

As a Vermont consumer, you generally (with a few exceptions) must be notified of your right to cancel (for a full refund) a sales transaction that occurred in person in your home or place of business, over the telephone, or in transient quarters (such as a sales presentation at a hotel).  This right does not apply where you have previously negotiated the sale at the seller's place of business, or for sales over the internet.  If you have a right to cancel under the statute and the business has not notified you of this right both verbally and in writing, your right to cancel may be ongoing (even if you have already received the good or service).  If you have questions about this right, contact us for more information.
