Connecting to UVM's Network

Before coming to UVM

You will need to:

  1. Update your security software
  2. Update your antivirus software
  3. Remember UVM's computer use policies

Step 1: Security Updates

Get the latest security updates to help protect your computer from virus infections.

Windows Security Update:

  1. Use Internet Explorer to go to the Windows Update website at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
  2. Click Scan for Updates. Windows Update scans your computer and displays a pre-selected list of critical updates, including security updates and service packs.
  3. Under pick updates to install, click Critical Updates and Service Packs. Windows Update then creates a list of the updates that are appropriate for your computer. Critical updates are selected for download automatically.
  4. Click Review and install updates.
  5. Select updates and then click Install Now. You might have to restart your computer after installing the updates.

When you're done, return to this window and move on to the next step.

If you are running MacOS X:

  1. Choose Apple menu > Software Update. The Software Update window opens. If there are any updates available, they appear in a list.
  2. Click the checkbox to select the items you want to install, then click Install. Type an administrator name and password (the name and password you used when you first set up your computer -- not your UVM NetID).

When the updates complete, Software Update checks for updates again. It does this because some updates require that you have installed previous updates. Your computer may need to be restarted between updates.

Periodically, Apple releases updates to your computer's software. You can check for updates manually or set your computer to check for updates automatically.

If you are running MacOS 9:

Enter the Software Updates panel:

  1. Choose Apple Menu > Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel, double-click the Software Update icon (update logo).

When your're done, return to this window and move on to the next step.

Step 2: Computer and Network Use Policy

When you activated your UVM NetID you agreed to be a responsible UVM network citizen. Want to review the key points? See below.

Key Points of the network use policy that I agreed to by activating my UVM NetID:

  • I am responsible for all use of computers and network accounts provided to me by the University, including data backup and password maintenance.
  • I agree not to: violate system or network security; interfere with system or network performance or another user's use of the system or network; attempt to hide my actions; or access network accounts, files or passwords intentionally and without authorization.
  • I agree to use the computers and network accounts only for lawful purposes which are consistent with University policies and procedures.
  • The University does not monitor and is not responsible for the content of my account or other computing services it provides. I am responsible for all information I access, make available or distribute using the computer/network account.
  • I may use my computers and network account for non-University matters except as otherwise prohibited by University policy or where such use unreasonably interferes with academic uses, or system performance/operations.
  • I agree not to use my network account for commercial purposes or personal financial gain.
  • I understand that violation of this policy may result in suspension or termination of my computer, network accounts or network access and may result in disciplinary action including, but not limited to, academic expulsion or employment termination. If the activity is also unlawful, I could also face criminal prosecution.

Connecting to UVM's Network

Connecting Through a Wireless Connection

Note:

  • WIRELESS CONNECTION IS AVAILABLE IN LOBBIES AND MEETING SPACES ONLY
  • The University of Vermont does not support Linux
  • Understand and acknowledge that we exercise no control over the nature, content or reliability of the information and/or data passing through our network using "UVM Guest"

UVM now has a wireless connection called "UVM Guest".  You will no longer need to download VPN client in order to get access to the internet. If you have registered for a conference and/or housing with Conference & Event Services, you will be sent an e-mail confirmation on how to connect to UVM Guest wireless connection before your conference date. If you have registered with Conference & Event Services for a camp this summer, your instructor/coach will have your username and password.

Please note that the username and password you receive will also be the same for logging into netreg when plugging into an ethernet port from your dorm room or meeting space.

INSTRUCTIONS TO CONNECT TO UVM GUEST WIRELESS NETWORK

  1. Turn on your laptop
  2. Search for available wireless connection
  3. Make sure to disable all other wireless connections except for UVM Guest
  4. Connect to UVM Guest wireless connection
  5. Open a web browser. (e.g.: Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Apple Safari, etc.).
  6. Visit any website: you will be presented with a login form labeled "GuestNet".
  7. Enter the Login Name and Password

You will then be brought to the website you originally requested. At this point, you will be able to visit any other website, and use email, instant messenger, and most other Internet programs.

Please note: You MUST try to visit a website before attempting to do anything else on the Internet. Failure to do so will prevent your computer from connecting properly.

Request Wireless Username and Password:
If you arrived late or you never received a username and password and you would still like to access the "UVM Guest" wireless connection, please click here.

Connecting Through an Ethernet Port

Are you connecting to the network by plugging in your ethernet cord to the wall from a dorm room or meeting space?

If so, after plugging in your computer to the ethernet port, you will automatically be asked to log in to netreg. You should have received a username and password when you registered for your conference and/or housing. This username and password can also be used when connecting to UVM Guest wireless connection. If you registered for a camp, your instructor/coach will have your username and password. If you arrived late or you never received a username and password and you would still like to access the internet, please click here.

Note:

  • When connecting to the data jack, please be sure to connect to the green or yellow jack. If you are still not receiving a connection please contact your Summer Conference Assistant.

Data Jack Picture

  • The University of Vermont does not support Linux
  • If you are staying at the University of Vermont overnight housing rooms, you must provide your own network cable to connect your laptop to the data jack.  UVM does not supply the cable in the room.  Overnight rooms require a network cable and are not wireless. The network cable must be at least 25 feet long to insure that you will be able to reach the data jack from your desk. Wireless is available in lobbies and meeting rooms only.  You can either purchase this in advance at any computer or office supply vendor, or wait and purchase this cable once you arrive at our on-campus UVM Computer Depot or at any local computer or office supply vendor.  UVM Computer Depot contact information is as follows:
