Medical Laboratory Science Bachelor of Science Program (B.S.)
Medical Laboratory Science is an excellent major for students interested in the life sciences and medicine. You will develop organizational skills, quantitative reasoning ability and diverse laboratory science competencies. Students choose to concentrate in one of three areas: clinical laboratory science, public health laboratory science, or biomedical laboratory science.
Students benefit from integrated program: Students take humanities and basic science courses in departments throughout the university, including the College of Medicine. The major is an integrated program, introducing you to medical laboratory science early in your education. The early introduction to professional practice provides you with skills which may lead to part-time employment during the academic year, or to summer jobs in research, public health or clinical laboratories. The professional experience also prepares you for a career after graduation.
Curriculum
The medical laboratory science core curriculum consists of courses in anatomy and physiology, chemistry, organic chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, immunology and mathematics. The clinical laboratory science concentration curriculum is mandated by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences and includes clinical coursework in the areas of laboratory sciences. The public health laboratory science concentration focuses on microbiology. The biomedical laboratory science concentration combines the basic biomedical and clinical sciences and focuses on the molecular and cellular basis of normal human physiology and human disease.

Internships
The Medical Laboratory Science Program includes intensive practical laboratory experience during the last semester of your senior year. During the fall of the junior year, students are assigned to an affiliate site. Internship assignments are made based on availability of space at the affiliate site and student preference. The laboratory practica offer state-of-the-art computer instrumentation using the latest methods and technologies. During your practicum experience, you will apply theoretical knowledge and learn the skills to perform laboratory procedures, to recognize and solve problems, to assume future leadership roles, to carry out research, and to educate others. You will work one-on-one with a staff technologist as you gain hands-on experience in diagnostic laboratory medicine and public health.

Accreditation
The Medical Laboratory Science Program at the University of Vermont has been re-accredited for the period April 30, 2008 - April 30, 2015 by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science, 5600 N. River Rd., Suite 720, Rosemont, IL 60018-5119.
Certification
Graduates of the program are eligible to take the certification exam required to practice in the profession. The Medical Laboratory Scientist Exam is offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

The Medical Laboratory Science Program prepares students for a range of careers in medical centers, public health departments, research centers and more. Students also go on to advanced study in any number of fields including medicine, pathology and public health.
