Abbas Raza

Second Year Graduate Student

I grew up in the old city of Lahore, Pakistan. My BS is in Biochemistry and MS in Virology & Immunology. I worked for a year as Research Assistant with Dr. Sohail Qureshi at Department of Biology, LUMS studying gene regulation in Sulfolobus. Then I moved to a clinical setting and worked as Research Associate at SKMCH, analyzing BRCA1 and 2 among breast and ovarian cancer patients before being selected for this PhD position.

Research Description

I am a second year graduate student working in the Program of Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) at University of Vermont, VT. I rotated with Prof. Sylvie Doublie in Department of Molecular Genetics as my first rotation working on protein crystallography of Nth1, a DNA repair enzyme. Then I did my second rotation with Prof. Cory Teuscher in the Department of Immunology on Histamine receptor signaling in an Experimental Autoimmune Encephalitis mouse model of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). My last rotation was with Prof. Mark T. Nelson in Department of Pharmacology where I explored TRPV4 ion channel signaling in mouse mesenteric arteries. I have now joined the Teuscher Lab and I plan to utilize my rotation experiences to explore further the histamine signaling networks in MS disease
