Outlook Express is a powerful mail and news client program. In order to use it, you must perform several, simple configuration tasks. Our instructions make several assumptions:
In the instructions, we will use the phony University affiliate name "Myron Kapoodle". Be sure to use your name and account information and not Myron's. For clarification, Myron's full name is "Myron Kapoodle", his Network ID (zoo.uvm.edu account username) is "mkapoodl", and his Alias is "Myron.Kapoodle".
To get things started, you will need to launch Outlook Express. On Windows XP, this is found under the Start->All Programs menu. On Windows 9x/2000 you will find it in Start->Programs:

If this is the first time you have configured Outlook, the "Internet
Connection Wizard" will start automatically. If you have configured
Outlook Express before, you will need to go to the Tools menu and select
Accounts, then click Add->Mail
You will be prompted to enter your "Display Name". This is your
actual, given name. It will appear as your 'friendly name' in all email
correspondences:

Click Next, then enter your email address. This is your email alias followed by "@uvm.edu". In our example, we entered Myron's email alias (Myron.Kapoodle) followed by "@uvm.edu" to get Myron's mail alias, "Myron.Kapoodle@uvm.edu":

Click Next to continue. In the My incoming mail server is a... pull down menu, select "IMAP". Now enter the names of your incoming and outgoing mail servers. You incoming server is "imap.uvm.edu" and your outgoing server is "smtp.uvm.edu":

Click Next to continue, then enter you Network ID (zoo.uvm.edu account username) in the Account Name field. We suggest that you clear the Remember Password field. If you allow Outlook Express to remember your password, anyone who has physical access to your computer will be able to read your mail and send mail under your name!

Click Next to continue, then click Finish to enter the Outlook Express program. You are not finished yet! You will need to go to the Tools menu in Outlook Express, and select Accounts. This will call up the Internet Accounts dialog. Click the Properties button:

This will call up the "imap.uvm.edu Properties" dialog. Click the IMAP thb, then enter mail/ as the Root folder path, enter sent-mail as the Sent Items path. You may also wish to clear the check for new messages in all folders option (this will speed up you initial access your Inbox during each mail session):

Click the Advanced tab, then check the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) box. You will note that the port value changes to "993". This is normal:

Now click OK. You will be asked if you wish to download your IMAP folders. Answer yes, then click OK to return to Outlook Express:

Outlook Express is now configured to handle your UVM email.
As a convenience, you may want to go on to configure Outlook Express to use the UVM directory server to lookup addresses. This will allow you to verify the email address of any UVM Affiliate before sending a message. You will need to go to the Tools menu again, and select Accounts. From the Internet Accounts dialog, select Add->Directory Service:

In the Wizard that appears, enter ldap.uvm.edu as the name of the LDAP directory server, then click Next:

Now select Yes to enable address lookups with this account. Click next, then Finish to complete the wizard.

This will take you back to the Outlook Express program, but you are not finished yet. Once again, go to the Tools menu, and select Accounts. Select the Directory Service tab, highlight the ldap.uvm.edu entry, then click Properties. At the ldap.uvm.edu Properties dialog, select the Advanced tab, then enter dc=uvm,dc=edu in the Search base field. Click OK to complete configuration.

Congratulations! You have now completed configuration of Outlook Express for use at UVM. Enjoy your mail and use it well.
