Mozilla is the latest generation of integrated Web browser, E-mail client, HTML Composer products offered by the Mozilla organization. Mozilla is the successor to the original Netscape Communicator suite, and contains very few functional differences from the last released version of the Netscape suite, version 7.1.
The Mozilla "Gecko"-based browser offers significant improvements over the previous Netscape line in the area of standards-compliance and stability. Mozilla leads the browser field in its support for multiple operating system platforms (currently it is available on Macintosh Classic, OS X, Windows, and virtually every flavor of UNIX). Mozilla includes a pop-up blocker, and has optional extensions to block ad banners in web pages. Also, Mozilla has no support for the infamous Active X controls which have created so many security problems for Internet Explorer users. Because many web developers do not test against Mozilla, and because Microsoft Web-based applications often will not work in Mozilla, most people will find that they need to use both Microsoft's Internet Explorer in combination with Mozilla for a fully-satisfactory web browsing experience.
CIT Client Services does not recommend the use of Mozilla browsers older than version 1.7. If you are using an earlier version of Mozilla or Netscape, CIT recommends that you upgrade. Version 1.7 offers several key speed, stability and functional improvements over earlier versions.
Also, if you do not have a more advanced HTML editor on your workstation (such as Adobe GoLive, Macromedia DreamWeaver, or Microsoft ForntPage), you might consider using the HTML editor embedded in Netscape.
If you fit in the above categories, you will want to use Internet Explorer or 6.0 with the latest security fixes, or the Apple Safari web browser.
Mozilla can be downloaded from the UVM Software Archive. The software archive contains links to this and other CIT-recommended and supported software packages, as information on hardware and operating system requirements.
Additional information can be found at the Mozilla Support site. Here you will find FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions), documentation, release notes, and news about Mozilla.org products.
Failing all else, you can contact the UVM Helpline.
