Sharing and Transferring Files
Sharing with people in your department or college
- (Campus File Services)
- Suitable for small and large files
- Departments can control lists of users who have read/write access to documents, databases
- Files may be shared between Windows and Macintosh computers
- Enables easy access to network-enabled printers.
- Services is available to Faculty and Staff only (not students).
Web File Transfer
- Enables easy transfer of files from Windows and Macintosh computers
- Send and receive files securely from and to both UVM affiliates and external collaborators.
Samba
Web
- Suitable for distributing small- to medium-sized documents and
data
- One person can update; many can view
- Distributed document does not have to be a "web page" (html document). Other formats (such as word processor or
spreadsheet documents) may be distributed as well.
- Few security options are provided restricting documents access. See
the UVM Web Guide for details.
- Any UVM affiliate with a Network ID can publish Web pages on Zoo
FTP
- good for all sizes of documents, data, images, etc.
- Files can be transferred from workstation-to-workstation (this
requires FTP server software on one workstation; not a simple solution)
- File can be transferred from a workstation to Zoo personal or departmental storage spaces, or a different FTP server.
- FTP is somewhat more complicated than Samba and Campus File Services. Requires knowledge of UNIX file permissions,
and FTP software usage.
Removable media: diskettes, ZIP and Jaz disks, tapes,
CD-ROMs
- Floppy disks, ZIP, Jaz, and other magnetic storage devices are highly unreliable.
- Ideal for the temporary storage of files when transferring work to a network-inaccessible location.
Email attachments
- Suitable for distributing small documents one person or to a small group.
- Difficult to establish the "current" or "authoritative" version of the document in transit.
- Document size is limited by local email server policies. Attachments are limited to 5 MB on Zoo.
