University Standard for Email Addresses

For increased clarity and consistency, UVM  adopted a new electronic mail address standard.

Email addresses are based on our full names, such as:

Myron.Kapoodle@uvm.edu

The information below tells why this is happened, and tells how you can make the switch if you're not already set up to use your standard address.

Meet your UVM standard email address

The standard email address is of the form:

    Firstname.Lastname@uvm.edu

For example, Myron Kapoodle uses: Myron.Kapoodle@uvm.edu

The basket weaving club uses: Basket.Weavers@uvm.edu

The Office of Scuba Gear Requisition uses: scuba@uvm.edu

Why?

The new standard clearly identifies your name, is usually easier to remember, and is generally regarded as more professional in appearance. This change also avoids association with the "zoo" name that has negative connotations for some.

When

Beginning immediately, we encourage everyone, especially those using "zoo" email addresses, to convert to this new standard.

How do I change my address?

In most cases, you will simply change one setting in your email program (Eudora, Netscape, Outlook, etc.) to show your new return address. When the time comes, CIT will update Webmail and Pine so you do not have to make any changes to them.

To learn about changing your settings for an email program you're already using, see:
Changing Settings for Your Standard Email Address
For general instructions for configuring various email programs, please see the Q&A section on the top right side of this Web page (you may need to scroll up). Click on "What email settings should I use?" or on the "What is" topic for the email program you use.

Until you have time to change the return address setting in your email program, you can continue to use your "@zoo.uvm.edu" email address. Effective July 1, 2003, the word "zoo" was automatically be removed from email return addresses in outbound email.

Department and group e-mail addresses are affected, too

Any official UVM publications, including Web pages, should use the new standard. Department, organization, and club addresses should take the standard form, too; for example, Basket.Weavers@uvm.edu. One of the advantages of the standard address is that you will not have to change your email address in the future. You will be able to use this address, even if you change email hosts or servers, as long as you are affiliated with UVM.

In summary ...

To update your address to the new standard:

• Change your e-mail program to use the new address.

Instructions are at: www.uvm.edu/cit/email/
• Start using your new firstname.lastname@uvm.edu address in all correspondence.

For example, if your business cards use the old "zoo" address, change them to the new firstname.lastname@uvm.edu address the next time you order new cards.
