Anti-virus Software

UVM Anitivirus Information

These pages contain basic information on the installation, configuration, and care for antivirus software licensed at the University of Vermont.

All antivirus products used at UVM are part of the Symantec/Norton Antivirus suite.  This includes Symantec Antivirus for the Macintosh and Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition for Windows.

All mail coming into the UVM main  mail gateway is scanned for viruses.  For more information on this service see the UVM Email Scanning page.

Current campus virus or malware alerts are listed online. Please check the alerts section regularly for information about current outbreaks or informational items regarding viruses, spyware, or operating system vulnerabilities.

Symantec Antivirus (formerly Norton Antivirus)

ETS has obtained a site license for Symantec Antivirus (Corporate Edition version 9 for Windows, and Symantec Antivirus version 9 for Macintosh) for use by all current University faculty, staff, and students on both University-owned systems and home computers.  Additionally, we have licenses for Windows and Novell NetWare servers, and E-mail gateways. This replaces McAfee Antivirus 4.5 for Windows and Virex for Macintosh.  These products should be removed from your system and replaced with the appropriate version of Norton Antivirus.

What it is:

Symantec Antivirus is a software utility which monitors all disk and network activity on your computer for known virus behaviors.  When virus activity is detected, Symantec Antivirus halts the activity and removes or cleans the virus.

Due to the rapidly-changing nature of computer viruses, an antivirus product is only as good as its' virus definition set.  This is a file which contains information on all currently known viruses, worms, and Internet Trojans.  Norton Antivirus must be updated to obtain the latest definition sets frequently.  For on-campus users of Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition and Symantec Antivirus for the Macintosh, this is accomplished automatically.  Off campus users must update their software manually.

How to get it:

Current versions of Norton Antivirus can be obtained from the UVM Software Archive.  This software may be installed on any University owned computer and one home computer per employee.  For information on server and mail gateway software, see the SAV for Servers page.

How to install it:

See the installation instructions for your platform:

Where to get "Help!":

  • Start by having a look at our Symantec Antivirus FAQ.  This page contains information on frequently seen issues with the installation and performance of Norton Antivirus (generally on the Windows platform).
  • If you are looking for information on a specific virus, see the UVM Virus FAQ, or the more authoritative Symantec Antivirus Research Center (SARC) Virus Encyclopedia.  The SARC site contains extended virus information, current virus alerts, and removal tools for specific viruses.
  • As always, the ETS Helpline will be available to get you out of a sticky situation.
