CDAE: Community Development and Applied Economics at UVM

Building Intellectual Community in the First Year: Multiple Approaches to General Education at the University of Vermont.

Hewlett Foundation.

First-year general education courses and programs at UVM are decentralized and vary widely across schools and colleges. This project funded three innovative curricular initiatives to integrate first-year general education courses and programs in the College of Agriculture, the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Natural Resources. All three curricular initiatives have resulted in permanent curricular changes for first-year students in the academic units involved. First-Year students at UVM will have a more integrated experience; they will be better prepared for the rest of their college experience, and retention rates will be improved. (T. Patterson, K.
