UVM Extension Mobile Computer Lab Makes Debut

The University of Vermont Extension Mobile Computer Lab made its grand debut during the winter of 2003 with workshops on computerized record keeping held in Morrisville, Springfield, and Middlebury. These 4-day workshops were attended by over 42 individuals from 32 farms who learned basic computer operation skills and how to use computers for farm record keeping. The UVM Extension Mobile Computer Lab consists of 10 laptop computers, a laser printer, and an LCD projector

The lab was developed for use in various UVM Extension programs, ranging from record keeping to accessing DHIA records to nutrient management. The concept of the lab has been around for quite awhile. However, last year Bob Parsons, UVM Extension Farm Management Specialist, secured primary financial support from the Northeast Center for Risk Management Education and matching financial support from UVM Extension and nearly 20 Vermont agricultural businesses and financial institutions, which enabled the lab to become a reality.

The objective of the computer lab is to train farmers to use their computers so they can decide which programs are most appropriate for their farming operations. The initial workshops began with instruction on basic computer file operation, and then moved on to exploring the use of electronic spreadsheets.

The primary workshop topic was an introduction to a popular commercial record keeping package that can be utilized for both farming operations and personal financial records. The participants learned to construct their own balance sheet, chart accounts, and financial statements. The classes consisted of four 3.5 hour classes over 2 weeks, and participants were assigned homework to help practice what they were learning in class.

The average age of the workshop participants was 44. They averaged 17 years of farming experience, and nearly 67% were female. The participants gave very favorable ratings in workshop evaluations, and their comments included: "Record keeping is much easier - even impressed my in-laws!" and "I now use my computer - and actually showed my kids a few computer tricks!"

In the future, the computer lab will be used across the state for training on topics ranging from basic computer operation, to sophisticated record keeping applications, to nurient management programs.
