GEOG 099A ~ The City

Instructor: Meghan Cope Associate Professor of Geography More . . .

American culture has had an ambivalent view of cities, at once loving them for their opportunities and vibrancy while reviling them for their sins and danger. Yet cities are, undeniably, places of action, innovation, experimentation, and excitement, as well as being the place of everyday life for over half of the earth's inhabitants. This course takes two primary approaches to examining The City- social inequality and urban sustainability ("green cities"). Using literature, film, and social science case studies on cities, we explore the inner workings of these intricate places and what roles cities play in our larger culture, society, and environment.
