Alum mentoring UVM student

Our programs provide a strong liberal arts education enhanced by significant cross-cultural and linguistic competence, skills that serve our graduates well in a wide variety of careers. Students who major in Global Studies learn to see complex connections through systemic and holistic thinking.

Global Studies graduates have gone on to pursue advanced degrees and successful careers in fields including international business and consulting; international non-profit organizations specializing in issues like environment; health, population, and food; the foreign service and other government agencies; policy analysis; research; print and broadcast journalism; the Peace Corps and other international development organizations; higher education; and social activism throughout the U.S. and the world.

Because of the broad interdisciplinary focus of the College of Arts and Sciences undergraduate program, global studies majors are equipped with a broad range of transferable skills, enabling them to succeed in any profession.

    An Academic Cocktail

Samuél Lopez-Barrantes ’10 moved to Paris shortly after graduation and offered this report from the banks of the Seine: “I am sitting in a small apartment overlooking the rooftops, writing away in the Parisian twilight. I have been living in France for the past two years, teaching English and writing a novel. I am convinced that if it weren’t for UVM’s European studies program, I never would have been able to live out this fairy tale. When I realized that I could have an academic cocktail of everything that made me tick, I immediately knew that European studies was a perfect fit.” Lopez-Barrantes has since published his first novel Slim and The Beast.
