CAS Faculty Research Award Recipients

The Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences is pleased to announce the recipients of this year's faculty research awards:

Lattie F. Coor Faculty Development Awards

The Lattie F. Coor Endowment was created in 1992 to recognize the exceptional accomplishments of a President who served for 13 years at the University of Vermont, from 1976-1989. In keeping with Lattie Coor's humanistic values, his advocacy of liberal arts education, and his interest in the relationship of the Humanities and other disciplines, the Lattie Coor Endowment was established to encourage innovation and excellence in Humanities teaching and research, with special emphasis on multi-disciplinary initiatives.

This year’s nine recipients and their research projects are:

• Paul Deslandes, Associate Professor in History, "The Culture of Male Beauty in Britain, 1840's-Present"
• Kelley Di Dio, Associate Professor in Art and Art History, "Sculpture and Status in Early Modern Spain"
• Jennifer Dickinson, Associate Professor in Anthropology, "Material Lives: Women's Voices in the Fabric of Vermont History, 1850 - 1950"
• Deb Ellis, Assistant Professor in Film and Television Studies, "Peace Has No Borders"
• Lutz Kaelber, Associate Professor in Sociology, "Exhibits on National-Socialist 'Euthanasia' Crimes in Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic"
• William McDowell, Associate Professor in Art and Art History, "Ashes in the Night Sky"
• Nicole Phelps, Assistant Professor in History, "Interpretive History of the Department of State from 1789 to 1924"
• Sean Stilwell, Associate Professor in History, "Pestilence and Planning: The Plague, Public Health and Colonial Urbanism in Lagos, 1903 - 1960"
• Harvey "Amani" Whitfield, Associate Professor in History, "From Slavery to Slavery-African Americans in Maritime Canada, 1783 - 1815"

Faculty Research Support Awards

Each year the College of Arts and Sciences provides up to five Faculty Research Support Awards. The maximum amount per award is $15,000.

This year’s four recipients and their research projects are:

• Pablo Bose, Assistant Professor in Geography, “Refugees and Immigrants in a Changing Vermont”
• Kathy Marmor, Associate Professor in Art and Art History, “The creation and production of The Messengers: an interactive wireless art installation”
• Abigail McGowan, Assistant Professor in History, “Domesticating places: Transforming house to home in twentieth-century India”
• Rory Waterman, Assistant Professor in Chemistry, “Collaborative Investigation of Main-Group versus Transition-Metal Bond-Forming Reactions”

Joan Smith Award

One Faculty Research Award is reserved for research that must address, illuminate or seek to ameliorate a pressing issue of social injustice. This award, the Joan Smith Faculty Research Support Award, seeks to honor the memory of former College of Arts and Sciences Dean Joan Smith, and is made possible partially through the proceeds of an endowment established by her family, colleagues and friends.

• This year’s recipient is Vikki L. Brennan, Assistant Professor in Religion, for her project " 'Singing the Same Song': Music, Religion and Civil Society in Nigeria"
