Up-close photo of a flying cow.

"In the span of two hours on a little boat moving across the Canal of Jari, we spotted and identified over 70 species of birds. As a lover of birds, I have developed what I call my "bird bucket list" including all species I hope to see in my life time. The hoatzin has been on my list for a while, before going to the Amazon Rainforest. I had the life changing opportunity to see a group of hoatzins flaunting their feathers in the trees. I learned that these unique birds are ruminators, meaning they digest their food with bacterial fermentation like cows. These flying cows are a mystery as their avian relatives became extinct 64 million years ago in the great extinction. The moment I spotted them, I took as many photos I could to further study the species."
