Standard 10: The faculty has, and maintains, intellectual qualifications and current expertise to accomplish the mission and to assure that this occurs, the school has a clearly defined process to evaluate individual faculty member’s contributions to the school’s mission.

The AACSB Maintenance of Accreditation process requires business schools to have clear and precise definitions for academically and professionally qualified faculty (Standard 10). AACSB requires that 50% or more of the faculty are academically qualified and 90% or more of the faculty are either academically or professionally qualified.

The UVM School of Business Administration must have well defined processes for classifying faculty as academically qualified, professionally qualified, or other. Faculty members must demonstrate evidence of continued research activity to remain academically qualified or continued professional activity to remain professionally qualified, both of which are subject to renewal every five years. Thus, the School of Business must have documented and well defined records in the areas of discipline-based scholarship, contributions to practice, and learning and pedagogical research. The UVM School of Business Administration should have a blend of intellectual contributions commensurate with our mission and with the relative sizes of our graduate and undergraduate programs.

The following guidelines are used to assess whether a faculty member is academically qualified, professionally qualified, or neither. The goal is for all faculty members to remain active in academic or professional activities.

Academically Qualified

A faculty member who has earned a terminal degree within the past five years will be considered academically qualified. A faculty member who was ABD when hired will be considered Academically Qualified while ABD during their first 3 years of service. Others will normally possess a terminal degree in (or related to) the field in which they are teaching and during the past five years accumulate a minimum of 20 points in mission related activities. At least 10 points must be in peer reviewed journals. In the case of peer-reviewed publications, the burden of proof lies with the faculty member to document the quality of the publication or the extent of the peer-review.

Professionally Qualified

Professionally qualified faculty members normally have a master’s degree and extensive professional experience at the time of hire. A faculty member will be considered Professionally Qualified provided that person has worked full-time in a management position for at least one year within the past five years with job responsibilities related to the field in which that person is teaching and/or serves on the Board of a public corporation. Others must accumulate a minimum of 20 points in mission related activities listed below or in activities listed in the section on Academically Qualified. The burden of proof lies with the faculty member to document the extent of participation in any of these activities.
