Honors College Students

In the College of Arts and Sciences

All students in the College of Arts and Sciences who are also members of the Honors College have a shared set of opportunities and responsibilities that come with their "dual citizenship" in both colleges. In their first and sophomore years of study, Honors College requirements are met by taking seminars in the Honors College itself (these seminars are identified by the HCOL prefix). In the junior and senior years, however, Honors College/CAS students meet their honors requirements by completing a series of courses offered in the College of Arts and Sciences (these seminars are identified by the HON prefix).

Requirements for completion of honors program:
  • Satisfy the requirements of the Honors College in the first two years (HCOL 95/96; HCOL 195/196). (NOTE: students admitted to the Honors College as sophomores have the first year seminar, HCOL 95/96, waived.)
  • Complete one three-credit special topics seminar (HON 195) offered during one's junior year.
  • Complete a one-credit thesis proposal-writing workshop (HON 101) during the spring term of one's junior year. (This requirement may be waived for students studying abroad during that term.)
  • Propose and gain approval of a College Honors Thesis (or Creative Project). These proposals are submitted to the College of Arts and Sciences Committee on Honors at completion of HON 101 or, for those who are abroad in the spring of their junior year, early in the fall semester of the senior year.
At the time of the proposal's submission, one must have either (a) a GPA of 3.4 or higher OR (b) a GPA between 3.20 and 3.39 with a minimum of three semesters on the Dean's List (as long as they entered UVM prior to the fall semester of 2007; students who entered UVM in the fall semester of 2007 or after with GPAs in this range will no longer be eligible to submit thesis proposals).
  • Write (or produce) and defend the six-credit College Honors Thesis (or Creative Project).
  • Complete the two-semester, zero-credit Senior Thesis Seminar (HON 201).
  • Fulfill all seven B.A. distribution requirements (regardless of whether one is seeking a B.A. or a B.S. degree). NOTE: this requirement is for the Class of 2010 and beyond.
  • PLEASE NOTE: HON 95 is no longer required and will not be offered.
