The University of Vermont

Prospective Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students may tap into the university's vast research resources and opportunities.

Hands-On

Research, internships, study abroad... Not all of your learning will happen in the classroom. Hands-on experience is encouraged, regardless of your major. We will guide your work to ensure a meaningful academic experience.

Internships and Independent Studies

Internships and Independent Studies allow our students to test their skills and interests in real world settings — courtrooms, media organizations, museums, hospitals. Faculty often provide connections; so do counselors in UVM Career Services where more than 3,000 internships are posted each year.

Study Abroad

Study abroad is popular with many UVM students. Several courses involve study in other parts of the state, country, or world. Recent examples include a community psychology course in Cuba and an anthropology/archaeology course in Anguila. In addition, nearly 25 percent of Arts & Sciences students spend a semester or year abroad. Programs approved by UVM's Office of International Education are available in more than forty countries.

Research Opportunities

Research opportunities are readily available to our undergraduate students. Academic Programs for Learning and Engagement (APLE) grants for Arts & Sciences students support research with faculty members or hands-on experience through internships. Funding is available on a competitive basis. Two University-wide programs, HELiX and URECA!, also offer research grants to undergraduates; HELiX opportunities include close mentoring and focus on the life sciences. Other undergraduate research opportunities grow out of connections students make with faculty and their academic departments.

Performing and Visual Arts

The Arts engage the talents of many UVM students, faculty and, visiting artists. The music scene on campus includes nearly a dozen groups ranging from Jazz Ensemble to Orchestra to the a capella Top Cats. UVM Theatre stages three major dramatic productions during the academic year in which students frequently work side-by-side with Equity actors. Art exhibits of student and faculty work are always displayed in the Colburn Gallery in Williams Hall, home to the Department of Art and Art History. Students can pursue internships with UVM's Fleming Museum, as well as other arts centers and organizations throughout Burlington.

Theme Housing and Student Clubs

Theme Housing and Student Clubs offer diverse opportunities for hands-on engagement. Pre-med students might choose to live in the Emergency Medicine suite or join the student-run Rescue Squad; outdoor enthusiasts can opt for the Outdoor Experience residence hall and join the UVM Outing Club; language and culture enthusiasts have several housing options to choose from in our Living/Learning Complex. Take a look at some of this year's theme housing options.
