Thirty-three percent of our students arrive at UVM without a major. We think that's fine. In most cases, you can remain "undeclared" until the end of your second year at the University and, provided you carry a recommended course load (approximately 15 credits per semester), you can still graduate within four years.
TAP seminars can help you find your way. As a first-year student you can take a Teacher Advisor Program (TAP) seminar. These classes are small, full of discussion, and approach engaging topics from a variety of disciplines and perspectives. You'll begin to discover your particular abilities and interests and your TAP professor will know you well, serving as both your seminar leader and your advisor.
Your faculty advisor will help with course selection and other academic planning. Advisors in the College Dean's Office and Career Services will also assist you with clarifying your goals, tailoring your academic plans, and ultimately selecting a major. Although the choice is yours, you won't have to make it alone.
Our curriculum will expose you to many fields of study. During your first two years, you'll be required to select courses in the arts, humanities, social, and natural sciences. Sampling a variety of disciplines will assist you in the process of selecting a major — and provide you with a strong liberal arts foundation.
