Maeve Eberhardt

Assistant Professor of Linguistics

Maeve Eberhardt, Assistant Professor of Linguistics, is a sociolinguist interested in how people use language in order to actively construct identities, at both the group and individual levels. She received her Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh in 2009, where she worked on the analysis of African American English as spoken in the city. Maeve focused on the ways in which ethnic and local identities intersect and conflict within this community, and how this is reflected through (non)use of local linguistic variables. Another of her interests is in linguistic variation at the individual level. Together with Scott Kiesling, she has been exploring stance as the basis for intraspeaker variation, and ultimately, as a way of explaining how identities may be created and built up over time.

Maeve came to UVM in 2008, where she teaches courses in linguistics, including "African American English," "Language & Ethnicity," and "Introduction to Linguistics."
