Melissa Willard-Foster, Assistant Professor of Political Science, earned her Ph.D. in August 2011 from the University of California, Los Angeles. She also holds a B.S. from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service and an M.A. from the University of Chicago.
Before coming to UVM, Willard-Foster was a fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science & International Affairs. Her research interests include hostile foreign military interventions, domestic causes of international conflict, war termination, and international cooperation. Her work on military occupations appeared in the Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies. She is now writing a book based on her dissertation, which examines the causes of foreign-imposed regime change.
Prior to life as a political scientist, Willard-Foster taught English in Ireland, the Czech Republic, and Japan, and backpacked through various countries in between. She is excited to move to Vermont, where she intends to pursue her passions for skiing, hiking, and eating good ice cream
