Kabir Tambar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Religion, received his B.A. (2000) from SUNY Buffalo and his M.A. (2003) and Ph.D. (2009) in Anthropology from the University of Chicago.
Kabir's research examines the relationship between secularism and sectarian differences in the Middle East, specifically in Turkey. Rather than focusing on secularism as a political philosophy or as a constitutional principle, his work interrogates the historical imbrications of secularism in the administration of religious communities and the policing of their boundaries. More broadly, he is interested in the role of the senses and of emotions in social life, and the politics of pluralism and minority citizenship.
Recently, Kabir has begun writing about populism. He is exploring the social and linguistic forms through which claims to popular authority stabilize, disrupt, or creatively construct spaces of democratic politics.
