Art and Art History

Assistant Professor of Art History, received her B.A. from Barnard College (2001) and her M.A. and Ph.D. (2004, 2009) in Art History from the University of Delaware. Before coming to Vermont, Pepper previously taught courses on twentieth-century art, the history of photography, and methodologies of art history at the University of Delaware and Miami University of Ohio.

Pepper's research focuses on the art and visual culture of Germany's Weimar Republic (1918-1933). Her dissertation, "Bound Vision: Reading the Photographic Book in the Weimar Republic," addresses how the display and sequencing of photographs in books relate to contemporary debates on modern visual experiences. Photographic books by László Moholy-Nagy, Albert Renger-Patzsch, Karl Blossfeldt, Helmar Lerski, and August Sander figure prominently in her research. At UVM, she will revise her dissertation for publication. Another project focuses on intersections between avant-garde photography and methodologies of art history in early twentieth-century Germany. She has received support for her research from the Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies at the Freie Universität in Berlin, the Getty Research Institute, and the Research Forum of the Courtauld Institute of Art.

Pepper enjoys cooking and baking, and she looks forward to visiting Burlington's renowned farmers' market. She also hopes to successfully cultivate a vegetable garden. Pepper also enjoys traveling, especially to Berlin and other places in Germany. She is excited to be part of the academic community at UVM.
