Ilyse Morgenstein Fuerst

Assistant Professor of Religion

Ilyse R. Morgenstein Fuerst, Assistant Professor of Religion, earned her B.A. in religion (magna cum laude) from Colgate University in 2005. She earned her M.T.S. at Harvard Divinity School in 2007. In 2012, she earned her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the Islamic Studies concentration in the Department of Religious Studies.

Her research deals with Islam in South Asia, historiography, and the development of theories of religion. Her dissertation, "Religions of Empire: Islamicate Texts, Imperial Taxonomies, and South Asian Definitions of Religion," explored the ways in which Muslims crafted definitional systems of religions alongside, apart from, and even in concert with British systems. Her next project will examine Muslim translations and commentaries of the Hindu epic Mahabharata and, specifically, the Bhagavad Gita contained within it.

When she is not teaching, researching, traveling, or writing, Ilyse enjoys dabbling in photography, culinary arts, hiking, and reading fiction.
