Dear Friends of the College of Arts and Sciences:

The fall 2013 semester is underway with 1,452 new undergraduate students joining a returning group of 3,124, for a grand total of 4,576 Arts and Sciences students. We make up 46 percent of the almost 10,000 undergraduates at UVM has and are ready for a semester full of action. Read more.

Spotlight on the Economics Department

Sara Solnick, Chair While the Great Recession of 2008 has created many hardships in the United States and abroad, it has also stimulated interest in the study of economics.  Perhaps as a result, the Department of Economics is vibrant and growing.  In the past five years, our number of majors has increased from 196 to 221 while the number of minors has more than doubled, from 98 to 237. CAS Hosts Aiken Lecture Speaker Steven Pinker

Steven Pinker Known for his verve, his wit, and his profound ideas--many of them explained by referencing pop culture--Steven Pinker helps non-specialists understand the science behind human thought and action. This ground-breaking talk will take place on Thursday, October 10 at 5:00 PM in Ira Allen Chapel. Pinker will explore the essence of human nature, mixing psychology and history to provide a remarkable picture of an increasingly nonviolent world. Read more.
